Unfortunately with a several players off island, numbers were limited ahead of the game but it was good to see Marler back in his position in attack. On the opponent’s side, UBS who had struggled to get their best players out prior to the Christmas break were back in full force and had a full turn out ready to make up lost ground. Star knew it was going to be a tough evening ahead.
UBS started the more brightly and Star found themselves pushed deep in their own half. Any time the red and whites managed to get the ball forward it was returned with interest as UBS had a game plan worked out to control the forages of Maguire.
It didn’t come as too much of a surprise when UBS opened the scoring, a forward move saw the ball coming over to the left and it was fired past Murray who had little chance. Things were to get worse for Star as first Coyne and then Thorburn left the field through injury.
Atlantic Star did manage to start getting back into the game as the first half wore on and could have pulled themselves level with a little more composure in front of goal, the UBS keeper being rarely threatened. It was the same old story that chances weren’t being taken.
Second half Atterbury made an appearance to try and stop the runs from the UBS forwards but while the defence were working hard, a lack of concentration saw UBS with a clear shot on goal which unlike Star they made no mistake in finishing.
Maguire was also struggling with an injury but played on through the pain barrier with the numbers limited, and a neat finish from him on the right gave a slight glimmer of hope for Atlantic Star with five minutes remaining. UBS weren’t to allow all their hard work to be undone and they sat deep in numbers restricting the opportunities for Doherty, Marler and Maguire.
In the end it was a setback for Atlantic Star but with still a large part of the season remaining it is important that they get back to winning ways against Old Man United next week
